The purpose of this website

This website will somewhat succinctly present the true meaning of Christ Jesus's life and mission — including a concise outline of what he did during his divinely-inspired mission to bring the Christianity to the world. Our earnest hope is that this website will answer the questions “Who is Christ Jesus?” and “Why should I read the works of Mary Baker Eddy” with enough clarity that you will seek to read and study both The Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy (both of which are cited throughout the following text). But first...

A short biography of Christ Jesus

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” — Genesis 1 : 1

God created all things in the universe, including man. That little word man is God's highest idea, and it includes everyone you see everywhere. No one is left out! In Genesis 1:27 it says, “God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Therefore our being God's man has everything to do with our God-given ability to express truth and love and every good quality of God; and has nothing to do with human thoughts about gender or family roles or societal divisions of any type. God gave man power — called ‘dominion’ in the Bible — but that power was not to be used in any way other than to do good, and to resist evil. True good blesses more than just one person.

With time, however, man stopped listening to God, and started to misuse their power by doing stupid things like hating and mistreating others, and lying, and cheating, and stealing, and setting aside personal wealth, and sectioning off land to create nations, and warring against other nations, and creating false gods to justify their greed and other evil deeds, and then praying to these false gods and being confused why they received no answer. Then, when their lives went poorly they would blame God, as though it was His fault! Over the years, God has sent different people to give warnings to mankind which would allow them to see what they are doing wrong, so they could again be good and live happy, peaceful lives. These people, like Moses, Abraham, Israel, David, Elijah, Daniel, and many others would do what they could to get men to obey the one and only God, but each time people started misusing their power again.

“For unto us a child is born” — Isaiah 9 : 6

About two thousand, seven hundred years ago, God gave a holy man named Isaiah a prophecy which said, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

When people heard this, they imagined how God would send a great and mighty warrior to be king over all the Earth. They told themselves many stories about it, imagining that this king would have great power from God, and would misuse it the way that they would if they had such power. Of course, this was not what God meant at all!

“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” — Matthew 5 : 8

Seven hundred years later, there were a group of people who loved God in the town of Nazareth, which is in a country called Israel. They prayed that God would work through them, and one day an angel visited a young girl named Mary to tell her she would be the one to have the baby that would grow to fulfill Isaiah's prophecy.

Mary was humble, and wanted nothing more than to be an obedient child to her Father-Mother God. While the world outside her door was not always the nicest place, Mary's heart was pure and her thoughts were God's thoughts. Here is a prayer Mary gave soon after the angel visited, from Luke 1 : 46-55, which shows how well she understood what was going on and why God chose her to be Jesus' mother:

“My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever."

“The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.” — Proverbs 11 : 23

Right before Mary's baby was born, three men from far away countries had traveled to Nazareth following a very bright star. God had imparted the wisdom to them that something very important was happening. The three men went to the local king, named Herod, believing he and his court full of religious men would know of the star and what was happening, and be just as excited as they were. But Herod and his men didn't know, because they had stopped listening to the wisdom from God and liked it better when men spoke about foolishness.

Herod was furious and wanted to these men to find the baby and then let him know so he could stop God's plan to bring the Christ into the world. The three wise men found Mary with baby Jesus in a stable. They gave him gifts, and then quietly left the country without telling anyone. Soon after God directed Joseph to take Mary and little Jesus to Egypt until Herod felt he had succeeded in his very evil plan.

“[Know] ye not that I must be about my Father's business?” — Luke 2 : 49

About twelve years later — some time after returning from Egypt — Jesus, Mary, and Joseph went to Jerusalem to attend a Jewish feast. Afterward, on their way back to Nazareth, Mary and Joseph realized they didn't know where Jesus was. It took three days for them to find him in the synagogue (a Jewish church) teaching their religious leaders, called Rabbis. Mary was quite upset and worried, but Jesus told his mother that he “must be about [his] Father's business” which of course meant God's business. Mary convinced Jesus to come with her and to wait until he was older, which he did.

In Jesus' early adult years, he worked as a carpenter. The times he lived in had many problems which are very similar to things that go on now. People of many different beliefs and many differing appearances were occupying a relatively small area, and most felt sure there was just a little bit of money and land and food which they needed to use their power to fight for.

The Jews had one God, the same one that Jesus believed in, but the Jews' form of worship was very materialistic, as though God was some super powerful strong guy somewhere who needed their sacrifices. The Romans, who had conquered the whole area that Jesus and the Jews lived in, believed in many gods, and they also believed that they had the right to use their power to do whatever they wanted. There were also others of differing beliefs and languages who lived there as well. All of these people were in desperate need of God's love and truth, and that was “his Father's business” which Jesus was there to do.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me” — Luke 4 : 18

Around the time he was thirty years old, Jesus felt it was time to devote himself to fulfilling another of Isaiah's prophecies, which he read in Luke 4 : 18, 19 — “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."

Jesus traveled around, meeting students (called ‘disciples’) who were willing to follow him and be taught by him. But Jesus wasn't just walking around and teaching, he was also healing. These healings happened by Jesus refusing to attach any ungodly qualities to each person. Even though their human picture may appear sick or flawed to others, Jesus saw in them the perfect individual God created. In Matthew 4 : 24, it says, “And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with [diverse] diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them."

Imagine this: In the days before cellphones, and televisions, and cars, when people just walked around, or rode horses or donkeys, news of the healing works that Jesus did went through all of Syria — a country next to Israel — which was over 70,000 square miles (bigger than New Jersey and Georgia combined!). This news spread just by people telling each other, because most could not read or write. This is how great the need of the time was, and how excited people were.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom” — Colossians 3 : 16

These teachings of the Christ were what the world truly needed, because while the many healings proved God was working through Jesus, it was the teachings which showed people how they were using their God-given power in the wrong way. As his disciples slowly began to understand these teachings, they began to see what the Christ truly was.

As Mary Baker Eddy once wrote (page 8 of the Red Book): “In the Hebrew, an arrow was called the son of a bow, a month the son of a year, etc. Jesus was the son of God in the Hebrew sense, only as a month was the son of a year; a month being a tiny representative of time. Jesus was in part the representative of God, of Life, Truth and Love – he represented Life and its continuance when he healed the sick and raised the dead; he represented Love by self-abnegation, purity and mercy; he represented Truth, when with Truth he destroyed error."

We say that the Christ is God's only son because it is what allows each one of us to understand and represent Truth, Life, and Love, and express God's qualities in all we do. Since God is Truth, then the Christ is what enables our understanding of Truth. Since God is Love, the Christ is our ability to express all the pure qualities of Love to each person we meet. Since God is Mind, the Christ is how we can understand and be directed by the thoughts of God, just as Jesus himself understood and was directed.

Christ Jesus' teachings began to show people what God actually wanted them to use their God-given power for. It was not to conquer the Earth; it was not to hurt others; it was not to divide or separate people; it was not to judge; it was not to use the world's weapons; it was not to be ignorant; it was not to suffer or cause suffering. God made us to be His image and likeness; to love one another; to lift others up; to forgive; to bless; to heal. Jesus' taught us that “the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17 : 21) and when you let the Christ work through you, God's kingdom truly is within you.

The Sermon on the Mount — Matthew, chapters 5 to 7

When Jesus gave his ‘Sermon on the Mount’ he included many teachings which were the exact opposite of what everyone had been taught at that time. Here are a few examples:

People thought for hundred of years that the Christ would use the tools of war to defeat their enemies, but Jesus said “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5 : 9) and “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5 : 44, 45)

People also thought that they should first plan for the future and set aside money to have for a later time, and then when their lives were easier they should look to God. To this, Jesus said, “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? ...for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” (Matthew 6 : 31-34)

Jesus also gave us his wonderful prayer, which is now called “The Lord's Prayer” —
"Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” (Matthew 6 : 9-13)

“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” — Galatians 1 : 10

And, as foolish as this sounds now, the religious people in Israel at that time — known as the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the scribes — began to see Jesus' teachings and healings as a threat to their way of life. Once they found out he wasn't a great warrior sent by God to conquer the Romans, they realized God sent Jesus to undo their man-made system of religion, which was how they had money and influence and big houses and fancy clothes. They decided to get rid of Jesus in any way possible.

The Pharisees had been trying for a while to fool him with words, but the Christ gave Jesus the intelligence and clarity to see through every trap. They saw Jesus healing people on the Sabbath (which for the Jews is on Saturday) and said he was breaking God's law, but it was clear that only God could have the power to heal all those people, so obviously God was quite fine with him healing on the Sabbath. Finally the Pharisees said that Jesus was claiming he was God, which Jesus never did! Jesus only said, “the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.” (John 14 : 10) He always gave full credit to God.

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:” — I Peter 3 : 18

The Pharisees then offered money to Judas — one of Jesus' disciples — to bring Roman soldiers to where Jesus was praying and to point him out so the soldiers could take him away. They had to do this because there was no way at that time to make an accurate picture of Jesus, or anyone else. The Romans brought Jesus to a Roman ruler named Pilate, who began to question Jesus to figure out why the Pharisees hated him so much. Jesus kept quiet for most of the questions, until Pilate said “knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?” to which Jesus said “Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above.” (John 19 : 10, 11)

Christ Jesus always knew that it is just wrong thinking, or sin, that would make us try to use our God-given power to do evil. Any attempt at giving our power to evil will cause suffering, not because God wants this to happen, but because it goes against the laws of Truth, Life, and Love that form the reality God created for us to live in. Each individual Pharisee and Roman who kept thinking and acting wrongly would face many hard days until they change their thinking to be in line with God's. The same can be said of anyone who thinks and acts in an ungodly way today.

“I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” — John 20 : 17

Because the Christ allowed Jesus to represent “Life and its continuance,” as Mrs. Eddy said above, every attempt to harm him or kill him had no lasting effect. When Christ Jesus rose up three days after the Pharisees and Romans thought they had put an end to him, he was able to show his loyal disciples that he was alive. This proved to each disciple that the Christ is the only sure way to use our God-given power in the right way, and they went forward writing about Christ Jesus' healings, his victory over death, and teaching anyone who would listen the good news of Christ's teachings for the rest of their days.

“He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also;” — John 14 : 12

Jesus showed us the way of the Christ, and proved that Christ's way truly works, but each of us need to actually follow this way ourselves so we might live a life that makes God happy and blesses others. God gave us the power to do this, and the Christ shows us how to use that power. Let's be grateful to Christ Jesus for all he did, and to God for giving us the Christ!

Why should I read the works of Mary Baker Eddy?

As just stated, the Christianity taught and lived by Christ Jesus was seen as a threat to the organized human religions of the day. Jesus' harshest words were for the Pharisees whose sole occupation seemed to be keeping the word of God to themselves and making life difficult for others. As Jesus said of them, “they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.” (Matthew 23:4)

And yet, once Jesus' time was over, those who came after slowly began to organize, and that organization brought with it a desire to humanly protect and perpetuate the church. This may seem a righteous desire, until we remember Jesus' own words: “where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20) We have no reason to gather as ‘Christians’ if it isn't in Christ's name and with the honest intention of doing the works he commanded us to do, namely, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8) Yet we can see that this addition of hierarchy and rules inside the early church lessened the Christly love and healing which went out to mankind, until at some point the healing stopped completely. Can we justifiably be considered truly ‘Christian’ if we are not following Christ in word and deed?

And then we have the Romans, who at first persecuted the Christians, and then took the church over which lead to a worldwide reign of subjugation and depravity that can in no way be confused with Christ's Christianity. Only ignorance of Christ Jesus' teachings — or malicious intent! — would tempt a person to believe that Jesus would actually want us to become like a Pharisee, or a Roman, or to combine the two into the Roman Catholic church, who, amongst other things, blatantly disregard his own command to “call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.” (Matthew 23:9) Jesus prophecied “the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.” (John 16:2) And kill they have, and worse! This trend has gone on so long that even the name ‘Christian’ means ‘hateful, ignorant person’ to the youth of today, despite Jesus commanding his followers to “love thy neighbour as thyself.” (Matthew 22:39)

Because of mankind's great need, God prepared Mary Baker Eddy to discover the Science of Christianity. Jesus said “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;” (John 8:31) If what Christ Jesus taught us was reproducible, and he expects us to be his disciples and follow him in word and deed, then Christianity must be a Science that we can prove for ourselves. God is not magic, but rather God is Love, God is Truth, and God is good! Therefore we do not need to be magicians, but simply live our daily lives practically demonstrating that what we do comes straight from Love, Truth, and good.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and the other works of Mary Baker Eddy explain how to practice the Science of Christ Jesus' Christianity in our daily lives. No part of Christian Science was designed give anyone the ability to control others. Mrs. Eddy has said that “The heavenly law is broken by trespassing upon man's individual right of self-government.” (S&H, p. 447) In the same way that anyone who professes to be a Christian and also hates their neighbor is most certainly a liar, so it is true that any professed Christian Scientist who attempts to control others is not living this Science. We are to have that Mind “which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5) and understand that God guides, guards, and governs all.

Mary Baker Eddy did end up founding a church, but her desire was to get the word of God to mankind. She intended, as Christ Jesus before her, to organize spiritually so we might fulfill Jesus' words “the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.” (John 4:23) Mrs. Eddy's Church Manual sought to limit human control. After her time, the church she started fell to human struggles for power and control, but the Science she discovered continues as independent Christian Science, and seeks to be true to Mrs. Eddy's own admonition: “Follow my teachings only so far as they follow Christ’s in word and deed.” (Divinity Course and General Collectanea, page 173)
